The stagecoach was preceded by the coach, which was a privately owned horse drawn carriage. The coach was elaborately designed and was used predominantly by European nobility and royalty. Near the end of the 16th century the coach was superseded by the stage, a public vehicle used for transporting passengers and goods. Generally known as the stagecoach, the vehicle was subsequently introduced into the United States.
